With the changing economic landscape and increasing trend to privatise public spaces and facilities, the understanding of what constitutes a civic space is shifting. At a time where public institutions are stretched to support its citizens, civic spaces can take over multiple roles to improve the wellbeing and life of the public.


Neil McDonald is one of the Founding Directors of the Social Enterprise Stour Space, the not for profit Art Gallery and community platform based in Fish Island / Hackney Wick. Neil was the principal designer of the interior fit out of the venue which aims to create an environment to promote collaboration and showcase the value and viability of creative enterprise. Joost Beuderman is a Director of the London-based design and strategy practice 00, where he leads on a wide range of research and strategy projects. His focus has been on civic entrepreneurship, social investment and systems change within the city. Joost was the main author of the 'Compendium for the Civic Economy', an overview of local innovations in economic regeneration, published with Nesta and Design Council Cabe in 2011.

public works is a non-profit critical design practice that occupies the terrain between art, architecture and research. public works recently complete a study for the London Legacy Development Cooperation on new forms of Civic Spaces and Social Ecosystems, the study analyses six London-based case studies, all with differing civic focus and program.
