Christobher King began Mabley Meadow when he was living in a house overlooking a neglected patch of grass in Hackney Wick. After contacting Hackney Council about it, he got permission to take it over and run it as a community-led green space. Chris has since moved from Hackney Wick, but still steers the meadow and does the fundraising.
Mabley Meadow was begun with the aim of turning an unused, unloved corner of Hackney Wick into an asset for local people, and a haven for wildlife. It's now full of flower bulbs, wildflowers and fruit and nut trees – and has been so successful that Hackney Council is planning on backing the meadow and making it a permanent part of Hackney's landscape.
