Shou-sugi-ban is a Japanese term meaning 'charred wood'. The technique itself is a very old vernacular form of treating wood. Takeshi Hayatsu, architect and native of Okayama - the region most prominantly using the technique today - explains "the treatment is most commonly used as an inexpensive means for cladding unimportant surfaces such as backs or sides of the buildings".
